Fitzrovia Chapel: a hidden gem in central London

Nestled in central London, just a short walk from Oxford Street and Fitzrovia’s creative streets, Fitzrovia Chapel is a hidden gem that makes you go “wow” the moment you step inside.

You'll discover shimmering mosaics, Byzantine‑inspired light, and an atmosphere that’s both sacred and playful await within.

Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON invites you to step inside this stunning chapel and uncover its hidden wonders.

The fascinating past of Fitzrovia Chapel

Fitzrovia Chapel was originally built for the Middlesex Hospital, serving patients, staff, and visitors. Its Byzantine‑inspired interior, filled with intricate mosaics and ornate details, gives the space a rich, almost otherworldly feel.

After the hospital closed in 2005 (most of its buildings were demolished between 2008 and 2015), the chapel might have been lost forever if not for a passionate restoration effort. A dedicated charity stepped in to preserve its beauty, carefully restoring the mosaics, marble, and architectural details.

Today, the chapel survives as a cultural hub, open to all, proving that even small, tucked-away spaces can have a big impact.

In recent years, it even hosted the 2024 Christmas broadcast of King Charles III, highlighting its role as a place for reflection and community.

Where to find Fitzrovia Chapel in London’s cultural heart

You’ll find Fitzrovia Chapel at 2 Pearson Square in Fitzrovia, a lively, artsy corner of central London. Keep an eye out for the small, almost secret entrance, it’s easy to miss, which only adds to the thrill of discovering it.

Once inside, you’re just a short stroll from tube stations like Tottenham Court Road, Goodge Street, and Oxford Circus, making it perfect for a quick weekday wander or a weekend art adventure.

The neighbourhood itself is full of history and creativity, with quirky cafes, independent galleries, and streets that have long attracted artists, writers, and thinkers.

Despite being tucked away, the chapel’s stunning marble, mosaics, and glowing light never fail to surprise even seasoned London explorers.

A closer look: the stunning interior of Fitzrovia Chapel

Inside, the chapel feels like a jewel box of colour and craft.

A rib‑vaulted ceiling glows with gold mosaics and blue stars, often compared to medieval Italian work. The walls are lined with green onyx and decorative patterns, with sculpted busts of the Twelve Apostles and Old Testament prophets beneath the arches.

The chapel uses dozens of types of marble, creating a rich, textured effect. A marble baptismal font carved with the Four Evangelists and alabaster features like the altar and lectern add to its intricate detail.

Stained glass windows designed by Clayton & Bell fill the space with soft light, including memorial windows in the baptistery, and a mosaic inscription over the organ gallery reads words from the Gloria in excelsis Deo.

All of this, the mosaics, marble, stained glass and inscriptions, combines to create an interior that’s intimate in scale but incredibly rich in detail.

Experience Fitzrovia Chapel: exhibitions and events

Fitzrovia Chapel isn’t just a historic space, it’s a living hub for creativity.

In the past, it has hosted major exhibitions like In Attendance, showcasing work by artists such as Paula Rego and Phyllida Barlow, and more recently, the striking DAVID BOWIE – A LONDON DAY, which displayed Kevin Davies’ intimate photographs of Bowie during a single day in 1992.

Seeing those images in the chapel’s glowing, mosaic-filled space makes the experience unforgettable.

Today, the chapel continues to welcome contemporary art, immersive installations, talks, and community events, letting visitors enjoy both its cultural programme and its extraordinary interior.
