Rose Gardens in London: the ultimate guide to the best spots

Summer is one of the most beautiful seasons to explore London. As the days grow longer and the warmth settles in, the city's parks and gardens slowly transform into something extraordinary.

Among all summer flowers, roses are the ones that make London truly glow. Their season usually runs from late May to July, with June being the absolute peak, when colours are most vivid, scent is at its strongest, and every garden feels like a destination in itself.

Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON invites you to discover some of the best spots to enjoy roses and plan a gorgeous summer walk in the capital.

1.Queen Mary's Rose Gardens, Regent's Park (the most beautiful spot)

Probably the most iconic place to see roses in London, and one of the finest rose gardens in the entire world.

Home to around 12,000 roses across hundreds of varieties, Queen Mary's Gardens sit within the Inner Circle of Regent's Park and come alive every June in an extraordinary display of colour and fragrance.

Deep reds, soft pinks, bright yellows and creamy whites fill every corner of the garden, and the scent on a warm morning is simply unforgettable.

The garden is surrounded by wide lawns and a small café, making it ideal for a leisurely visit. Open from 5am, it's one of the few places in London where you can arrive early and have the roses almost entirely to yourself.

2.Hyde Park Rose Garden

Tucked near Hyde Park Corner, the Rose Garden in Hyde Park is one of those quietly beautiful spots that most visitors walk straight past.

The curved beds are planted in soft peach, cream and yellow tones, giving the garden a romantic, unhurried atmosphere.

There are plenty of benches to sit and take it all in, and the garden is free and open 24 hours, making it perfect for an early morning or an evening stroll after work.

3.Old English Garden, Battersea Park

Hidden within Battersea Park, this walled garden is one of London's loveliest secrets.

Step inside and the noise of the city fades away completely. The Old English Garden is a beautifully maintained enclosure full of roses, irises and climbing plants, with a small pond, a sundial and plenty of benches tucked between the hedges.

It has a calm, private feel even on sunny days. It's a real sanctuary in the middle of south London.

4.Holland Park (Dutch Garden), Kensington

Holland Park is one of London's most elegant green spaces, and the formal Dutch Garden at its heart is well worth seeking out.

The rose beds here are immaculately kept and sit alongside clipped hedges and seasonal planting, giving the garden a classic, continental feel.

Best of all, it's just a few steps from the famous Kyoto Garden, so you can enjoy two very different gardens in a single visit.

5.Fulham Palace

One of London's best-kept secrets, Fulham Palace is a historic Bishop's palace set within Bishop's Park on the north bank of the Thames.

The walled rose gardens here feel genuinely special: enclosed, fragrant and full of character.

The setting is unlike anything else in the city: a medieval moat, a beautiful courtyard and a lovely café all add to the sense of stepping back in time. It's a hidden gem that many Londoners have never even heard of.

6.Bishop's Park

Right next door to Fulham Palace, Bishop's Park has its own pretty rose garden with a fountain at its centre and lovely river views along the Thames towpath.

The two spots connect seamlessly, and most visitors do both in one outing, starting with the riverside walk through Bishop's Park before wandering into the Palace grounds.

It's a perfect summer afternoon combination.

7.The Hill Garden & Pergola, Hampstead Heath

If you know about the Pergola at Hampstead Heath, you already love it. If you don't, prepare to be astonished.

This grand Edwardian structure, built in the early 1900s for Lord Leverhulme, stretches 200 metres along a raised walkway, draped in climbing roses, wisteria and fragrant greenery.

Walking beneath the stone columns in June, with roses tumbling overhead and views across the Heath below, is one of the most magical experiences London has to offer. Free, slightly hidden, and rarely crowded. Don't miss it.

8.Golders Hill Park

A short walk from the Pergola, Golders Hill Park is a beautifully kept corner of Hampstead Heath with a charming walled flower garden where roses take centre stage through the summer months.

The park also has a small animal enclosure, ponds, a great café and wonderful views across the city. It's the perfect complement to a visit to the Pergola next door.

Together, they make for one of the loveliest summer mornings in north London.

Rose season is glorious but brief, it peaks in June and begins to fade by mid-July. These eight spots give you the full breadth of what London has to offer, from grand dedicated gardens to hidden walled enclosures and truly magical Edwardian pergolas. Take your time with each one, and enjoy the city at its most fragrant and beautiful.
