This is maybe the most enchanting little spot I’ve ever come across in London! Tucked between the towering skyscrapers in the City, St Dunstan in the East used to be a church, but now it’s a (free) ruined garden that feels like a secret world of its own: quiet, green, and completely magical!
It’s a marvellous place to explore in every season, with each one bringing its own unique atmosphere.
Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON is taking you inside this hidden gem to show just why it’s so special.

A glimpse into the past: the story of St Dunstan in the East
St Dunstan in the East has a fascinating history. Originally a medieval church, it was heavily damaged during the Second World War. Unlike many other churches in the City of London, it wasn’t rebuilt. Instead, the ruins were turned into a public garden.

Now, it’s a secret and quiet little oasis where greenery grows through the old stone walls and arches. You can still feel a bit of its history, but it’s also just a really peaceful place to wander and take a break from the city.

Why it’s such a special spot
What makes St Dunstan in the East so remarkable is the striking contrast everywhere you look: centuries-old ruins quietly standing amid the gleaming skyscrapers of modern London.

On a clear winter or early spring day, when the greenery hasn’t fully taken over, you can even catch glimpses of iconic landmarks like the Shard peeking through the arches.

The garden’s gentle quiet feels like a world apart from the usual city hustle. It’s common to see Londoners popping in on their lunch break, with a sandwich or a book in hand, just to pause, slow down, and soak up the calm.

And over time, nature has quietly taken over, with plants and flowers threading their way through the old stone walls, almost like the garden is gently reclaiming a piece of history for itself.

Squirrels and birds have also made it their home. They aren’t shy at all and seem to love a bit of attention from visitors, adding even more life and charm to the place.
Best time to visit
The garden is lovely any time of year, but the vibe changes with the seasons. Spring brings fresh greenery and flowers, summer is perfect for soaking up the sun, autumn gives golden, storybook leaves, and even winter has its charm with the ruins standing out against a crisp sky.

If you are planning a visit, the best time to visit is early morning for peace and quiet, late afternoon for that soft golden light, or on weekdays if you want it almost empty.
