The Italian Gardens: London's most romantic hidden gem

No matter how many times I visit Kensington Gardens, one place always stops me in my tracks: the Italian Gardens. There's something about the fountains, the elegant stonework, and the atmosphere of the place that makes me pause every single time.

Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON is taking you to one of the capital's most romantic (and surprisingly overlooked) treasures: the Italian Gardens.

The Royal love story behind the Italian Gardens

Created in the 1860s, the Italian Gardens are over 160 years old, and their origin story is just as captivating as they look!

Prince Albert was a passionate gardener who had created an Italian garden at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight (the royal family's beloved holiday retreat) complete with raised terraces, fountains, urns, and geometric flower beds.

Inspired by those happy times together, he gifted these Grade II listed Italian Gardens to Queen Victoria, to remind her of those delightful holidays on the Isle of Wight. A whole garden, as a love letter. Quite something, right?!

The Pump House was designed by Sir Charles Barry, the architect behind the Houses of Parliament, while the gardens were laid out by James Pennethorne.

Look closely and you'll spot Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's intertwined initials carved into the Pump House wall.

The building once hid a steam engine that powered the fountains, and that seemingly decorative pillar on the roof is actually a disguised chimney.

What to see at the Italian Gardens

The gardens are centred around four ornamental basins, surrounded by statues and intricately carved urns.

Look closely and you'll spot swan heads, dolphins, ram's heads, and women's faces woven into the stonework. Every detail rewards a second glance.

At the heart of the gardens stands the Tazza Fountain, overlooking the Long Water. Flanked by two female figures pouring water from large vases, its weathered stone and moss-covered surfaces give the whole scene a timeless feel.

Spring is especially beautiful, when vibrant tulips frame the fountains in a burst of colour. That said, the gardens have a charm that carries through every season.

A major restoration in 2011 returned the gardens to their former glory, including the creation of eight new life-sized swan heads to replace damaged originals.

The Italian Gardens Café

Right beside the gardens is the Italian Gardens Café, which is worth a stop : overlooking the fountains, it pairs Italian-inspired dishes and espresso with elegant interiors featuring designs by Gio Ponti.

The café's living roof, planted with Mediterranean-style greenery, helps support biodiversity in Kensington Gardens. A thoughtful detail that complements the setting perfectly.

Best of all is the terrace, which offers a lovely elevated view over the gardens. It's an ideal spot for a leisurely coffee or brunch while the fountains provide the soundtrack.

Kensington Gardens: the Royal Park that frames it all

The Italian Gardens don't exist in isolation. They sit within one of London's most beautiful royal parks.

Kensington Gardens is a 265-acre green escape with Kensington Palace, the Albert Memorial, the Serpentine Galleries, the Peter Pan statue, and gorgeous flower walks all waiting to be discovered.

If you haven't explored the full park yet, I've written a complete guide with everything you need to know.

Why you really shouldn't skip this

Most visitors to Kensington Gardens make a beeline for Kensington Palace or the Diana Memorial. Tucked away near Lancaster Gate, the Italian Gardens are often overlooked.

That's part of their charm. Free to visit and lined with benches, they remain surprisingly peaceful even on busy days. It's the kind of place that feels removed from the pace of modern London.

There's also a satisfying sense of discovery. Finding a corner of the city that seems designed for quiet contemplation rather than crowds. (Though it does photograph beautifully, just saying!).
