HIDE restaurant: a Michelin-starred breakfast in Mayfair!

A sweet and savoury morning in one of Piccadilly's most beautiful dining rooms, beneath a show-stopping oak staircase!

It took more than 15,000 hours of craftsmanship, over half a tonne of glue and 4,500 square metres of oak veneer to build a single staircase. Then it travelled all the way from Poland to Piccadilly in eight trips!

That staircase is the heart of HIDE restaurant in Mayfair, a Michelin-starred address facing Green Park. And breakfast at HIDE is the loveliest way to see it 😊

Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON invites you down its oak curves for croissants, caviar and a cup of Marco Polo tea.

The story of HIDE restaurant and its famous oak staircase

A Michelin star on Piccadilly

HIDE opened in April 2018 at 85 Piccadilly, a joint venture between chef Ollie Dabbous and Hedonism Wines. Within months, it had earned a Michelin star, which it still holds in the 2026 guide.

Ollie Dabbous has since stepped down, and the kitchen is now led by chef director Josh Angus.

StairStalk: a tree made of oak

Then there's the staircase. Called StairStalk, it was designed by the London studio atmos to look like a living plant, growing from the shadows of the basement bar towards the daylight.

Its designers drew on the trees of Green Park across the road, the oak barrels used to age spirits and childhood fairy tales. Look closely: no two treads are the same!

Each curve is made of thin oak veneers pressed against curved moulds around a hidden steel core. Five metres wide, the spiral links the bar below, the ground floor and the first-floor dining room. Absolutely stunning!

Following the spiral

We came to HIDE because I'd heard so much about it on Instagram, and that staircase had stayed in my mind. It's even more beautiful in real life!

The atmosphere is hushed and woody, all warm oak and soft light. The staff were lovely too, friendly and welcoming from the moment we sat down.

Breakfast tables beside the staircase at HIDE

Breakfast is served from 7am on weekdays and from 9am at weekends. The open bakery bakes its viennoiseries every morning, so do save room for something sweet.

Lobster benedict with Umai caviar

We started on the savoury side with the lobster benedict with crushed avocado and Umai caviar, a real delight. The lobster was absolutely perfect.

The caviar is subtle, adding a delicate extra savour rather than stealing the show. A feast!

A croissant with a crème brûlée heart

Then came the sweet treats. Our favourite? The cherry & Biscoff crème brûlée croissant. Absolutely incredible!

The crisp, flaky outside gives way to tangy cherry and a soft vanilla crème brûlée inside. A real treat in every bite!

The HIDE acai bowl

To finish, the HIDE acai bowl with berries, perilla and verbena was excellent. Under the acai smoothie, you'll find a purée of fresh fruit with crunchy granola hidden inside. Divine!

Mariage Frères tea and a powerful espresso

To drink, I chose a Mariage Frères Marco Polo rooibos, while my husband went for an espresso, rich in flavour and wonderfully strong. We loved both!

What makes HIDE restaurant so magical in the morning

My tip: book for 7am on a weekday, as soon as the doors open.

The rooms stay wonderfully quiet until the crowds arrive around 8am, so you can savour the place, take photos and admire that staircase almost on your own!

Afterwards, cross the road for a stroll in Green Park, or wander along Piccadilly to Burlington Arcade and Fortnum & Mason.

Take one last look at that staircase on your way out: it’s one of the most memorable visits on Piccadilly! 🌿
