Golden leaves crunch underfoot. Mist hangs over the parks. A crisp morning turns into a cosy afternoon in a gallery.
Welcome to London in autumn, when the city puts on its most beautiful colours and the best free things to do in London in autumn are right on your doorstep. Parks, canals, museums and festivals: not one of them needs a ticket.
Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON takes you through my 19 favourite free ways to enjoy London this season!
The best free things to see and do in London this autumn
Wander through London's parks at peak colour
Head to Richmond Park early for misty mornings and the deer rut, when the stags roar and clash. Good to know: keep at least 50 metres away and enjoy the show from a distance.

Bushy Park is Richmond's quieter sister, with roaming deer and plenty of space to escape the crowds.

In St James's Park, the oldest of the Royal Parks, enjoy the fiery trees frame that postcard view of Buckingham Palace. Its famous pelicans arrived in 1664, a gift from the Russian ambassador, and their descendants still parade by the lake!

Regent's Park offers the last roses of the year and wide, leafy avenues for a crunchy walk.

For something more magical, slip into the Hill Garden & Pergola on Hampstead Heath, a raised Edwardian walkway draped in climbing plants that feels like a forgotten secret garden.

Explore my favourite neighbourhoods
In Little Venice, colourful narrowboats line the canal and fallen leaves float on the water. Stop at a waterside cafรฉ and follow the towpath towards Regent's Park.

St Katharine Docks is one of my favourite secret corners of London: bobbing yachts, cobbled lanes and Tower Bridge peeking over the rooftops. Add a seafood feast Iโm still dreaming about and the most fun jazz night in town, and youโve got your next London adventure sorted โ๐ท

In Notting Hill, the pastel houses glow in the autumn light, and Portobello Road buzzes with stalls. Slip down the side streets for quieter corners.

Canary Wharf shows London's modern side, with skyscrapers reflected in the docks and the free Crossrail Place Roof Garden, a surprising green escape. Then stroll the South Bank for river views and street performers.

Warm up in London's free museums
Grey skies? Perfect excuse. Grab your umbrella and dive into Londonโs best free museums, packed with some exhibitions that wonโt cost you a penny. A soggy day has never felt so rewarding โ
At the British Museum, Declaring Independence: USA 250 explores the story of American independence, until 29 November.

Fashion lovers will adore The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon at the V&A (until 3 January).

Next door, the Science Museum opens Becoming America on 23 October: it's free, but book ahead.

From 13 October, Tate Modern's Turbine Hall welcomes Tarek Atoui's new Hyundai Commission. At the Natural History Museum, don't just go inside: explore the Urban Nature Project gardens outside.

Join London's free autumn festivals
The London Literature Festival fills the Southbank Centre from 21 October to 1 November. Many events are free, including a Poetry Day on 24 October.

On 25 October, Diwali on the Square lights up Trafalgar Square with music, dance and food from 1pm to 7pm. On Halloween, plan your own spooky walk past old churchyards and haunted pubs!

Why autumn is the best time to discover free London
Autumn is when London slows down and shows off. The summer crowds have gone, the light turns golden, and the parks look like paintings.
For visitors and Londoners alike, autumn proves that the best of London doesn't cost a penny. Mix a park walk with a museum and a festival, and you've got a perfect day out.
By the time the last leaves fall, you'll have seen a whole new side of the city!
