IWA Canalway Cavalcade: Little Venice's most magical Bank Holiday Festival reviewed

Imagine over 100 narrowboats dressed in bunting and bright colours moored along the glittering canals of Little Venice, live music, the smell of street food, and joyful vibes everywhere.

The IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2026 just took over one of London's most beautiful neighbourhoods for an entire free bank holiday weekend, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. If you missed it this year, I have one thing to say to you: don't let it happen again!

Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON is taking you to enjoy Little Venice Cavalcade 2026!

The IWA Canalway Cavalcade: a Festival with a big heart and a long history

The Canalway Cavalcade has roots in passion and activism. In 1945, writer Tom Rolt and Robert Aickman met on Rolt’s narrowboat Cressy and set out to save Britain’s canals, founding the Inland Waterways Association to protect and restore them.

For decades, the IWA worked to protect Britain’s waterways. In 1983, they brought that energy to Little Venice, launching Canalway Cavalcade as a May Bank Holiday event. Over 40 years later, it’s grown into a lively, much-loved celebration.

What makes the Little Venice Canalway Cavalcade so special?

Little Venice is already one of London’s most photogenic spots, with willow trees, peaceful towpaths, floating cafés and colourful houseboats. But during Cavalcade weekend, it shifts into a much livelier scene, with the whole area filling up with boats, people and energy!

Around 130 water homes moored along the picturesque route between Blomfield Road, Warwick Avenue and Warwick Crescent, each one dressed up and ready to impress.

Boat owners spend weeks (sometimes months) preparing their narrowboats for the occasion, and the result is a floating visual feast!

You can see every boat freshly painted and carefully decorated, with owners proudly showing them off, chatting and smiling, there’s a real shared joy in it!

During 3 days, visitors enjoy a pageant of boats, trade shows and stalls, live music, children's activities, competitions, Morris Dancers, a real ale bar, and a wide variety of snacks and food.

Families, couples, solo explorers: everyone had a place here. And did I mention it was all completely free? No ticket, no booking! Just show up, walk the towpath, and soak it all in!

Why the 2026 edition of the Canalway Cavalcade was one to remember

Every year the Cavalcade is special. But 2026 had something extra.

This year marked the 42nd anniversary of the IWA Canalway Cavalcade. Over four decades of this extraordinary community gathering returning to the banks of the Grand Union Canal each May (except during covid years).

What makes it even more special is that the whole event is run by IWA volunteers, people who give their time out of genuine love for London’s waterways and sharing that passion with everyone who comes.

This year also saw a strong commitment to sustainability: reusable containers, public transport encouraged, and minimal environmental impact across the site. A free, volunteer-run, eco-conscious festival in the heart of London? That's something worth celebrating.

If you were there, you already know how special it was. And if you weren't, save the first May bank holiday weekend 2027 in your diary right now. You have been warned...
