A café with a heart (and whiskers)
I visited on a gloomy day outside, but found real comfort and warmth inside. I was delighted to share the experience with my kids. They were initially a little nervous with all the cats jumping around them, but soon grew in confidence and even started stroking them whenever the cats allowed it.
So what exactly is a cat café? The concept is simple and brilliant: you book a slot, order your coffee, enjoy a slice of cake, and spend the whole time surrounded by beautiful, purring cats who are very happy to share the space with you.
But Java Whiskers takes things a step further. This isn't just a cute concept. It's a rescue café and they take their mission very seriously.
All the cats and kittens you’ll meet are rescues looking for their forever homes. Java Whiskers partners with The Scratching Post to rescue and rehome cats from streets and shelters, providing them with a safe, loving environment until they find their families. So far, over 900 cats and kittens have been successfully rehomed!
The café is divided into two spaces: the Cat Lounge, home to adult rescue cats of various ages and personalities, and the Kitten Lounge. It's Europe's only dedicated kitten lounge, full of tiny, playful furballs who will absolutely melt your heart.
And if science is your thing: it's been well documented that spending time with cats reduces stress and anxiety. Consider this your most adorable wellness session of the year!
Java Whiskers: 2 locations, one big mission
Marylebone, the original
The Marylebone café opened in October 2020 and was the first Java Whiskers location in the UK. Tucked away on Great Portland Street, it's a charming, intimate little place spread over two floors, with a beautiful glass ceiling that floods the space with natural light.
I visited this one myself and it truly lives up to the hype. The Cat Lounge is on the ground floor (wheelchair accessible), with the Kitten Lounge downstairs. Even the waiting area has a large window into the Cat Lounge, so you may spot curious cats before your session begins.
It’s very central, just an 8-minute walk from Oxford Circus.
White City, the flagship
The White City café opened in December 2022 and is the bigger of the two. Located near Westfield Square, it has an outdoor seating area and large windows that let you peek at the cats from outside. It's also fully wheelchair accessible across all areas, including both lounges. This one is even licensed to serve alcohol, so a glass of wine with a kitten on your lap is absolutely on the table.
Both cafés offer afternoon tea, seasonal events, kitten yoga, craft sessions, and even private hire for birthdays and special occasions. There is genuinely something for everyone.
What makes it so special
Here's the thing: London has no shortage of great cafés. But Java Whiskers is something else entirely.
It combines a beautifully designed, peaceful space with comfort food and coffee, alongside the knowledge that each visit helps support the rehoming of cats in need. Every ticket contributes to the care of the resident cats. It’s a warm and rewarding experience.
And then there’s the very real possibility of falling in love with one of the cats and leaving with a new companion. It happens more often than you might think and honestly, it’s easy to understand why (I have a cat at home too!).
