Secretts Farm has been growing fruit and veg in Milford, Surrey, since 1938. But for two weeks every October, its fields belong to skeletons, scarecrows and thousands of pumpkins!
That's Secretts Farm Pumpkin Week, a half-term Halloween trail with a pick-your-own pumpkin field, just an hour's drive from London.
Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON takes you along the trail, into the pumpkin field and back to the paddock for a proper pumpkin feast.

The story behind Secretts Farm
In the 1970s, the Secrett family opened a shop alongside their fields in Milford, near Godalming, and it's now an award-winning destination in its own right.
Inside, you'll find seasonal fruit and veg, a butcher, a florist, a wine merchant and one of Surrey's largest cheese counters, with over 300 British and European cheeses to choose from.

Pumpkin Week has become a local institution: when I visited, it had already been running for around 15 years. After a brilliant Halloween at Cammas Hall Farm, I couldn't wait to try this one!

Secretts Farm Pumpkin Week: a day on the Halloween trail
Following the spooky trail
We booked our tickets in advance, drove about an hour from London and arrived bright and early, ahead of the crowds.
Your ticket includes a scavenger hunt sheet, and the trail winds past polytunnels and fields, with a handmade scene around every corner.

Keep an eye out for the skeletons on the pirate ship, the spider-covered shed and a hay bale with a very worried face.

A row of pumpkin-headed figures even marches across the field, as if they're heading home from work!

I loved the humour behind it all: a Flying Lessons sign for witches, skeletons soaking in garden tubs, and another one perched on a fountain.

Roll up for the sideshow alley
Further on, a vintage-style sideshow alley sets the scene, with a Cotton Candy stall, the Famous Siamese Twins and a weightlifting skeleton.

What surprised me most? The little ones weren't scared one bit by the skeletons and giant spiders. They took it all in their stride!

Peek inside the shipping container too: it's been turned into a witch's potion lab, complete with jars, spell books and cobwebs.

Picking pumpkins in the Surrey fields
The trail leads to the pumpkin field, where crates stacked high overflow with squashes in every shade of orange, cream and green.

Armed with wheelbarrows, we wandered between the rows in search of the perfect ones. This season's varieties include Harvest Moon, ghostly white pumpkins, warty Goosebumps and the giant Big Moose.

Pumpkins are priced by size and paid for on your way out. In just a few minutes, our little harvest was loaded up and ready for carving!

Pumpkin soup, pedal tractors and fancy dress
Back at the paddock, the menu goes all in on pumpkin: soup, curry and cake, alongside BBQ favourites, Crumpy's Smoke Shack burgers and mulled cider for the grown-ups.

Entry to the fancy dress competition is included, while extras like face painting, mini pedal tractors, a magic show and a haunted house cost £3 each. On our visit, there was even a vintage merry-go-round!

Why Secretts Farm Pumpkin Week is worth the drive from London
It's not every day you see a skeleton lifting weights in the middle of a Surrey field!
Every scene on the trail is handmade, and the farm's playful sense of humour shines through. Children get a gentle, giggly first taste of Halloween, while parents spot the jokes hidden in each display.

Coming from London, it's an easy escape to the Surrey countryside. Make a weekend of it with the autumn colours at Winkworth Arboretum, just outside Godalming.
At Secretts Farm Pumpkin Week, the skeletons steal the show, but the pumpkin field is the real prize.
Just leave room in the boot for your pumpkins, and for a wedge or two from that famous cheese counter on the way home! 🎃
