What my family and I love most on weekends is discovering new outdoor spots around London. Breathing fresh air and taking in beautiful scenery is our favourite way to unwind at the end of the week!
We recently visited Greys Court, a stunning National Trust estate near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, and it was the perfect way to enjoy a sunny day surrounded by history, gardens, and charming countryside.
Today, DOYOUSPEAKLONDON invites you to explore Greys Court and make the most of its gardens, historic house, and peaceful outdoor spaces, ideal for a relaxing family day out!

Greys Court: historic house and gardens in Oxfordshire

Greys Court is nestled in the southern Chiltern Hills at Rotherfield Greys, near Henley-on-Thames.
This picturesque corner of Oxfordshire is renowned for its rolling hills, charming villages, and stunning landscapes. A perfect destination for anyone seeking a scenic escape.

Greys Court features a stunning Tudor country house set within lovely, well-maintained gardens, combining historic charm with peaceful outdoor spaces.

I love this place offering a bucolic setting. There are several viewpoints and atmospheres in the same place… the ideal destination for a day out near London!
A Tudor Country House

Greys Court features a stunning Tudor country house set within lovely, well-maintained gardens, combining historic charm with peaceful outdoor spaces.

It felt like someone was still living here (the last owner Lady Brunner was still living at Greys Court when she passed away in 2003).

The house reopens in March, and I highly recommend stepping inside whenever you can.

It’s a wonderful way to experience life in previous centuries and a fantastic opportunity to introduce children to history in a fun and immersive setting.

We attended a talk given by one of the volunteers, and it was absolutely fascinating!
We learned so much about the five families who lived in the house, tracing its journey “from a Tudor show house to a 20th-century family home”, and gaining a real sense of how life changed over the centuries.

The house is filled with personal stories, historical testimonies, and cherished memories, making it one of the most fascinating historic homes I’ve visited so far.
Exploring the gardens of Greys Court

The gardens provide a perfect setting to unwind, surrounded by vibrant flowers, lush plants, and mature trees that make every stroll a delight.

The gardens are thoughtfully divided into distinct areas, including the kitchen garden, the rose garden, and the enchanting wisteria walk, each offering its own unique charm and atmosphere. I can’t wait to return during wisteria season, as it promises to be an absolutely spectacular display at Greys Court!

At the start of the walk, you cross a charming Japanese-style bridge, as if stepping into a new world. A perfect invitation to relax, let your hair down, and soak in the beautiful scenery.

If you like, you can also take a longer stroll around the estate. Something we couldn’t resist! I walked with my kids, who particularly enjoyed running in the open fields among big trees and the sheep!

From there, simply follow the winding paths and open fields, guided by the many trees along the way. Don’t forget to climb a few of them, the elevated view offers a wonderful perspective of the surrounding landscape!

It was such a beautiful, tranquil day, and with the house and gardens almost entirely to ourselves, it truly felt like a little slice of heaven!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and found inspiration here.
